A Luxury Traveler’s Guide to Mexico’s Pacific Coast

A few weeks ago, my husband and I celebrated our five-year anniversary in one of Mexico’s most beautiful and underrated luxury destinations: Puerto Vallarta and the surrounding Riviera Nayarit region.

I’ve spent a lot of time in Cabo over the years and continue to love it, but this trip was a reminder of just how diverse Mexico can be. The landscapes here couldn’t be more different. Instead of desert scenery and dramatic rock formations, you’ll find lush jungle-covered mountains, secluded beaches, rolling coastline, and vibrant greenery everywhere you look.

This region offers something I find many travelers are looking for today: the ability to truly slow down and disconnect while still having access to world-class hotels, incredible dining, outdoor adventure, and authentic cultural experiences.

Whether you’re planning a honeymoon, anniversary trip, family vacation, or simply looking for a luxury beach destination that’s a little different from the usual choices, Puerto Vallarta, Punta Mita, and Mandarina deserve a spot on your list.

Understanding the Region

One of the biggest misconceptions about Puerto Vallarta is that the city itself is the destination.

While downtown Puerto Vallarta is absolutely worth visiting, many of the area’s most sought-after luxury resorts are actually located north of the city in Punta Mita and Mandarina.

Think of Puerto Vallarta as your arrival gateway.

From there, travelers can choose between:

Puerto Vallarta

Perfect for travelers who love culture, nightlife, restaurants, galleries, and walkable neighborhoods.

Punta Mita

A private peninsula known for luxury beachfront resorts, championship golf courses, family-friendly amenities, and some of the best service in Mexico.

Mandarina

A newer luxury resort enclave surrounded by jungle and ocean, offering a more secluded and immersive experience focused on wellness, nature, and privacy.

The beauty of this destination is that you don’t have to choose one or the other. Many travelers spend the majority of their time enjoying their resort while taking a day trip into Puerto Vallarta or one of the nearby surf towns.

My Stay at One&Only Mandarina

For our anniversary trip, we stayed at One&Only Mandarina, and it quickly became one of my favorite resort experiences in Mexico.

The property is spread across hundreds of acres of jungle-covered coastline. Rather than traditional hotel buildings, accommodations consist of individual treehouses, cliffside villas, and ocean-view retreats tucked throughout the property. Golf carts are used through out the property to get to different areas like the beach or one of the three pools.

Every accommodation feels incredibly private, and nearly all feature their own plunge pool.

What struck me most wasn’t necessarily one specific feature, it was the overall feeling of being there.

No matter where I was, the views were breathtaking.

Whether I was reading by the pool, having breakfast overlooking the jungle canopy, enjoying dinner at sunset, or riding through the property in a golf cart, there was a constant sense of being immersed in nature.

For the first time in a long time, I truly disconnected.

I spent mornings with coffee and a book. Afternoons by the pool. Long walks along the beach. Time without a packed schedule.

Of course, there was still plenty to do.

We explored all three pools, enjoyed the swimmable beach, went horseback riding along the coastline, and spent time experiencing different areas of the resort. My husband played golf while I visited the spa, which has become known for its wellness-focused programming and traditional healing experiences, including the Temazcal ceremony.

For couples looking to celebrate an anniversary, honeymoon, milestone birthday, or simply reconnect, One&Only Mandarina is difficult to beat.

Is Puerto Vallarta Safe?

This is one of the most common questions I receive.

During my visit, I never felt unsafe.

The luxury resort communities in Punta Mita and Mandarina are gated, highly secure, and designed specifically with guest safety in mind. Security is visible without feeling intrusive, and the overall atmosphere remains relaxed and welcoming.

Whether I was touring resorts, exploring local towns, or traveling throughout the region, I felt comfortable and secure throughout my stay.

As with any destination, travelers should use common sense precautions, but this region continues to be one of Mexico’s most popular luxury travel destinations for good reason.

When Is the Best Time to Visit?

November through April

This is peak season and offers ideal weather conditions.

Expect sunny days, low humidity, comfortable temperatures, and excellent whale-watching opportunities. It is also the busiest and most expensive time to visit.

May through October

This period brings warmer temperatures, occasional rain showers, and fewer crowds.

While many travelers avoid these months, I actually think they can offer tremendous value. The landscapes become even greener, resorts often offer attractive pricing, and crowds are significantly lighter.

My Favorite Months: May and November

If you’re looking for the sweet spot, I love recommending May and November.

These months often provide the best balance of weather, value, and crowd levels.

Beyond the Resort: Experiences Worth Leaving For

Explore Sayulita

Sayulita has become one of the most popular surf towns in Mexico.

Colorful streets, boutique shops, local restaurants, and a laid-back atmosphere make it a fun day trip from Punta Mita or Mandarina.

Visit San Pancho

Just north of Sayulita, San Pancho offers a quieter and more sophisticated atmosphere while still maintaining its authentic charm.

It’s one of my favorite towns in the area for travelers looking to escape larger crowds.

Downtown Puerto Vallarta

Spend an afternoon walking the Malecón, browsing galleries, shopping local boutiques, and enjoying dinner overlooking Banderas Bay.

The energy here feels completely different from the luxury resorts and provides a wonderful contrast.

The sunsets in this region are spectacular.

Whether by catamaran, private yacht, or sailing vessel, getting out on the water at sunset is one of the most memorable experiences available.

Mexican cuisine is one of the highlights of visiting the region.

Food tours, tequila tastings, and cooking experiences provide an excellent opportunity to learn about local culture while enjoying incredible meals.

Rosewood Mandarina

Best For: Families and Couples

Rosewood offers a very different experience from One&Only. The property feels more connected to the ocean, with many accommodations offering direct ocean views and a stronger beachfront atmosphere.

Families looking for luxury with a beach-focused experience will find this an excellent option.

St. Regis Punta Mita

Best For: Couples, Golfers, Luxury Traditionalists

Elegant, refined, and timeless.

The St. Regis offers exceptional service, beautiful beachfront accommodations, and a quieter atmosphere than many neighboring resorts.

Four Seasons Punta Mita

Best For: Families and Multigenerational Travel

This remains one of my favorite luxury family resorts in Mexico.

Multiple pools, a lazy river, extensive children’s programming, golf, beaches, and activities for every age group make it an easy recommendation for families.

Four Seasons Naviva

Best For: Couples Seeking Something Unique

With only fifteen luxury tents, Naviva feels less like a hotel and more like a private wellness retreat.

Every aspect of the stay is customized, from dining to activities, creating one of the most personalized luxury experiences available in Mexico.

Final Thoughts

One of the things I loved most about this region was the variety.

Whether you’re looking for a luxury resort where you never have to leave the property, a charming surf town, incredible food, outdoor adventure, world-class golf, wellness experiences, or simply time to slow down and reconnect, Puerto Vallarta, Punta Mita, and Mandarina truly offer something for everyone.

It’s one of those destinations that appeals to couples, families, multigenerational travelers, and groups alike. The combination of beautiful scenery, authentic culture, luxury accommodations, and incredible service makes it a destination I find myself recommending more and more.
